Broadway Review: An Act of God

Do you have troubles with the 10 Commandments? Well, now God Himself is on Broadway and He has a new list! Played beautifully by The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons (yes, we get the irony!), God decides to update His list of Commandments, as well as answers existential questions from the audience.

An Act of God is a 90-minute show where the audience sits back and watches Jim Parsons wearing a white toga over his shirt and jeans, accompanied by two angels Michael (Christopher Fitzgerald) and Gabriel (Tim Kazurinsky), explaining to us that He actually likes gays (it was not Adam and Eve after all, but Adam and Steve) and that He hates that we say “bless you” everything someone sneezes. No theme is forbidden and, when asked why the Holocaust happened, God replies “Well, no Holocaust… No Cabaret”.

I’m pretty sure a lot of people will get offended by some of the jokes, but I love the fact that these jokes are actually being told on Broadway and with an actor admired by so many (and Jim Parsons is really wonderful in it). In a world where politic correctness is coming back stronger than ever, it’s nice to know that there’s still somewhere where we can laugh at anything.

Written by David Javerbaum, who runs the Twitter account @TheTweetOfGod and who also writes for the Daily Show With Jon Stewart, An Act of God is a wonderful comedy, especially to those who actually like to laugh at anything, without being judged.
