Broadway Review: Fish in the Dark

A comedy written by Larry David (Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and starring Jason Alexander (who played Larry David’s alter ego in Seinfeld: George Costanza): nothing could go wrong, right? As it turns out, it’s not as funny as I thought it would be.

Norman Drexel (Jason Alexander) learns that his father is dying at the hospital, so his entire family gather around his father’s deathbed for support. However, it’s when all the family is together that the problems arise and, with them, a lot of jokes. Should Norman tip the doctor who’s taking care of his father? Can his brother bring a date to the hospital? With which brother should their mother move in?

A lot of the situations in the play are funny, but not enough to make me laugh out loud, as I do when watching Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. The cast is really good, but the best of them is definitely Jason Alexander, who masters this type of character (a mixture of Larry David and George Costanza). He owns the character and makes almost everything funny, even if the line itself is not that funny.

It’s a good show and it definitely kept me entertained, just not as much as I wished.
