Broadway Review: Kinky Boots

This musical has been on my “to watch” list for a while and I finally saw it! I was lucky that I got to see the show with Wayne Brady on the cast! I like him since I watched Whose Line Is It, Anyway?, years ago. He’s only going to be there for a few weeks.

Inspired by true events and winner of the 2013 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Kinky Boots tells the story of Charlie Price (Andy Kelso), who inherits his father’s shoe factory and wishes to save the family business from bankruptcy. In order to succeed, he realizes he has to change dramatically the line of shoes being produced. That’s when he meets Lola (Wayne Brady), a cabaret drag queen who gives him an idea that would change their lives.

The story is simple, but full of inspiring and deep messages, since it talks about accepting yourself and others, following your dreams, etc. The songs written by Cindy Lauper are very upbeat and exciting! There are a couple more dramatic, but they’re played in the right moments.

The costumes are great, especially the ones worn by the drag queens! And the cast is also amazing, especially Wayne Brady! It’s incredible how he can dance in those heels!

It’s extremely fun and entertaining and definitely worth watching when you visit New York! After the show I was able to take a picture with Wayne Brady himself, as you can see below!
