Movie review: The last five years (2015)

I’ve always been a huge fan of musicals, especially Broadway adaptations. So it’s never easy to say that I think a musical is boring, but that’s what happened with “The last five years”.

The movie is about Jamie (Jeremy Jordan) and Cathy’s (Anna Kendrick) five-year relationship. Jamie is a talented novelist and Cathy is a struggling actress. The movie is entirely sung-through and the songs are performed by each one alternately. Also, Cathy’s songs begin at the end of their marriage and move backwards in time while Jamie’s songs start at the beginning of their affair and move forward to the end of their marriage.

They are both great singers and the idea of showing their story using an intercutting timeline device makes it interesting to watch. Having said that, I believe that it is a little boring, since they are the only ones with “lines” through the entire movie. There is almost no interaction with anybody else in the cast, who are basically extras in the background while they’re telling their story. So I guess it works better on a stage than on the screen.
