Movie review: The theory of everything (2014)

One of the things I enjoy the most when watching a movie is seeing the actor completely transforming himself and incorporating the character (especially when the actor is portraying a famous person who is still alive).

That’s what happens in “The theory of everything” (nominated for 5 Oscars, including best picture). We witness Eddie Redmayne’s transformation into the British physicist Stephen Hawking beginning from his early days at Cambridge University, when he is diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (also known as motor neurone disease or Lou Gehrig’s disease) until most recent years. It is really gratifying to see his incredible performance, especially as he gradually loses movements of parts of his body. In my opinion, Eddie Redmayne should win the Oscar this year.

Since the movie is based on the memoir written by Jane Hawking (“Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen”), it focuses more on the relationship between Stephen and Jane (played by Felicity Jones, nominated for best actress), showing that Jane stood by him when doctors said he only had two years to live and her own struggles in dealing with her husband’s disease. So we leave the theater with the feeling that it is a little to biased. However, the real Stephen Hawking has seen the movie (he even allowed his own computer voice to be used) and he said nothing but good things about it, especially about Eddie Redmayne. So it is very possible that things really happened the way the movie shows.
