Movie review: McFarland, USA (2015)

Honestly, I wasn’t too excited to see this movie. But I got the opportunity to watch an advance screening for free, so I went anyway and I’m glad I did! It was much better than I thought it would be.

Based on true events occurred in 1987, it tells the story of Jim White (Kevin Costner), a Physical Education Teacher who loses his job at the school he was working due to his bad temper with his students. Since this information is kept on his records, he finds it hard to get another job, so he is forced to move to a small town in California (McFarland) and work in the only school that accepted him. His family isn’t too excited about moving to such a small town, where the main language spoken is Spanish and almost everybody comes from Mexico, but they don’t really have any other options.

Jim is the coach’s assistant of the school’s football team, but quickly fights with the coach and loses his position. Running out of options, he has an idea of creating a cross-country running team after seeing how fast his students would run from school to the fields, where they work as pickers to help their families. Initially against their will, 7 students join the team and we learn about the struggles their families go through and how practicing becomes the happiest part of their days.

It may sound like a sad story, but keep in mind that it’s a Disney film! So it’s a “feel-good movie”. And it has more comedy than I was expecting. I was really entertained through it all. Definitely recommend it.
